Trees

First, a health update: I turned the corner today. I am no longer a walking zombie, and have officially declared myself healthy again.

*kazoo fanfare*

Meanwhile, there's not much news to tell of. How much can happen in your life when you've only been at most half-awake for a full week? I don't know. Maybe lots happened and I didn't notice.

I've been reading this book on trees. My mom bought it for me. I heard that it was filled to the brim with amazing facts about trees that you never could have imagined in your wildest dreams. For example, there's one type of tree that's able to warm up its blossoms, to encourage beetles to crawl into them on chilly nights. The beetles mate in the blossoms, thus covering themselves with pollen, and thereby assuring that the trees are pollinated. Trees that survive by acting as cheap, sleazy beetle sex motels! Who knew?

(Yes, that is actually in the book.)

Unfortunately the really cool facts are few and far between. Most of the book is an overview of every single notable type of tree that exists, complete with long, Latin names which I dutifully sound out but will never remember. There's just enough interest in it to keep me plodding through, so far. We'll see if I make it through the entire 400 pages.

Other interesting things I have learned about are Screw Pines, stinkwood, and bum seeds (a.k.a coco de mer).

Sorry for the links instead of uploaded pictures. Either Blogger is pitching a fit, or my internet connection is dicey, because the image thing just isn't happening.

There you go. A brief peek into my currently uneventful life. No news is good news! Now go read something interesting.

Glad to hear you're feeling better. I can't wait to see what WIGSF adds about the "bum seeds". I know my dirty mind went bonkers when I saw it.

Maybe he's a better, nicer guy than me.

Yay for feeling better! And you're sure you're better, right? Not just being optimistic? No relapses young lady!

Does your book say anything about the American Redbud? That's my favorite tree. Heart shaped leaves and everything. :)

Glad you are feeling better and full of interesting facts about trees!

Glad to hear that you're feeling better.

A book about trees.

Hmmm...I'm currently reading a psychological study on the Grimm's Fairy tales.

Hope yours is more interesting than mine (mine was the end result of researching baby names for a story. and no, it's not a kiddie story).

Woo-hoo! I'm so glad you've bounced back!

I don't know if I could read that book about trees all the way through, but I could browse through it and enjoy it in bits and pieces.

However, I'm still reading Julie & Julia and I never thought I'd enjoy a book on cooking and recipes, so you never know.

Stay healthy!! :)

REal happy to hear you're up to snuff : )

Hey, I love trees, I've killed my fair share, but I really do love them.

Um, does that sound a tiny bit unbalanced?

Oh well. So... maybe you could look up Acacia trees, and more importantly, how to kill them, because they are killing me over here.

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble in the trees,
For the beetles want some nookie,
While the junebugs ignore their pleas.

My apologies to Neil Peart, but there's no way to makes trees interesting.

Are you sure you aren't still ill? I mean reading a book about trees? :) You should have come on that train ride through the Redwoods when we were in the States. You could have bored us all, I mean impressed as all with your knowledge! ;) :D

Glad you are feeling better. :)

You have way more patience for reading than I do. I'm quite certain I'd use that book to put me to sleep each night - intentional or not.

Oh yeah - and more importantly - I did a little cheer for you feeling better. Great news...

darcknyt: WIGSF didn't deliver the shazam this time. Instead we got poetry. He's unpredictable like that.

DarcsFalcon: Your favourite tree has such pretty pink blossoms!
As for me, I don't have 100% of my energy back yet, but I'm trying not to push myself. I'm working 6-hour days this week, to take it easy. So far, so good. :-)

Ron: There were other interesting facts, but by the end of day yesterday when I had a chance to post I was so tired I couldn't think of any of them.

G: The psychology of the REAL fairy tales, the ones that don't necessarily end Happily Ever After, is something I would like to learn more about. It's definitely more interesting than the tree book.

Scarlet: I save the Tree book to read for when I can't pay full attention. For example, Ken has the TV on, so if I want to read with him on the couch I have half an ear listening to the TV show. Both inputs together occupy my brain fully, so I don't feel bored.

Powdergirl: I was just reading about acacias last night! I learned that they are related to peas and beans. Other than that, I got nothin' for ya.

WIGSF: The best experience of trees is to be out amongst them, not to read about them. Why do I insist upon continuing with this book? I'm a librarian's daughter. That should explain everything.

LL Cool Joe: I would have loved to see the Redwoods! I've always been a tree lover. I used to walk around the block as a child, stopping to "chat" with my favourite trees. And yes, sometimes I hugged them.

Nilsa: Thanks! It's not so bad to have a soporific book on the shelf. When my brain is whirling there is nothing like measuing my way through some long, Latin words to focus me and calm me down at the end of the day.
