R.I.P. Fridge

It was a marathon long weekend of friends and family (mostly family) and this Spark is feeling crusty.  I am way too much of an introvert to enjoy as much social exposure as I got.  Whose idea was it to schedule Passover and Easter on the same weekend this year?  It's a terrible idea

I didn't host any of the events, however I did have responsibilities at my mother's seder, not least of which was dish-washing.  My mother does not have a mechanical dishwasher, and never has.  Let me tell you, the amount of cutlery, plates, bowls, cups, wine glasses, etc. 13 people can go through in an evening is impressive, especially when you factor in half-a-dozen ceremonial foods and a soup course.  I waved a white tea towel and let my grandmother's paid carer take over when it came to the pots and pans, and tea/dessert. (She was cooking and serving while I was washing the rest of the time).  Thank goodness for her help.

I came away from the weekend with a sense of accomplishment (mission accomplished!) and a sense of needing an additional weekend to recover from my weekend.  The good news is that despite indulging in Easter chocolates and my sister-in-law's Pavlova,

(photo stolen from here)

I didn't gain any weight this weekend.  Hallelujah, it's an Old Testament miracle!

In other news, my fridge is almost dead.  A couple of weeks ago I noticed that yogurt cups were not feeling as cold in my hand as they should.  Turns out the refrigerator side of our French-door-style frigo wasn't working anymore.  The freezer side is fine, although it's running double-time to try to make up for the... fridge... side of the fridge.

I figured out that I can freeze containers of water in the freezer, then move them over to the fridge side to cool it old-fashioned-ice-box-style.  It's a decent stop-gap solution.

I would love to be able to take advantage of the Big Fridge (i.e. outside), but I don't have any raccoon-proof bins to store food in on my  patio.  I bet the local raccoons would love to get their dexterous little paws on my yogurt cups.  Especially the cappuccino flavor.

Aw, bummer about the fridge. Will you replace it with the same style? They're nice. :)

Seders sound like a LOT of fun to do until you try one. Or watch one being tried. And I can fully and completely appreciate what you're saying about the introverted recharge time needed after such events. I got tired READING about your weekend.

Glad you had some good times though, Spark. :)

Eeeeekkk... I actually hid from people the entire weekend. Introvert squared!!! I remember a camping trip where we left a cooler outside, but put the picnic table on the lid holding it closed. I woke up to hear what sounded like Freddy Kreuger trying to get to our lunch meat. Raccoons, DENIED!

That fridge thing happened to me once when I was going to Jenny Craig for my good and had just gotten a weeks worth of frozen food. I had to farm it out to friends' refrigerator. And then had to live out of a cooler for the milk for my coffee until the new one was delivered. #paininthebutt

It's always good to be alone after such gatherings - I can completely relate. And that pavlova looks so good!

I tend to become a recluse for bank holiday weekends.

Living on the east coast of the UK the roads are often impassable as all the hardworking people visit the seaside areas and one cannot go far before getting snarled up in traffic jams.

No, not my cuppa tea.

I have never tried Pavlova. It looks so good! It's tough to not gain weight over a holiday weekend so well done.

Sounds like a raccoons dream I agree. I hope you can get a new fridge before the summer kicks in. As for washing up by hand, there IS a strange sense of achievement to doing it, but it's an emotion I can manage to live without most of the time :)

A Seder AND an Easter and no weight gain?!? Goodness, Spark, I need some of that miraculous stuff you've got there!

I am sorry to hear about your fridge and I feel your pain. Having to deal with cleaning everything out, storing it someplace that also stays cold, then putting it all back again when you get the new fridge in - whew!

Hopefully you'll get that all taken care of soon.

I'm glad you had a nice Passover and Easter! Sounds like it was a lot of fun and good eats. :D
